Preserving Tradition: The Art and History of Apple Butter in Appalachia
Preserving Tradition: The Art and History of Apple Butter in Appalachia
Join local Chef Nick Atkins in this hands-on workshop exploring the rich history and tradition of apple butter making in Central Appalachia. In this class, you’ll not only learn how to make your own batch of apple butter but also gain insight into its cultural significance within Appalachian foodways. Nick will guide you through every step of the process, from selecting the perfect apples to simmering and canning your creation. The class will also delve into the historical context of apple butter—how it became a staple of Appalachian cuisine and how it reflects the region’s agricultural history. Participants will leave with a jar of homemade apple butter, a deeper appreciation for Appalachian food traditions, and practical skills they can carry forward into their own kitchens. This class is one in a series of three being hosted by The Wild Ramp focusing on Appalachian history, traditions and culture.
